Belmont Stakes Horse Stats For Saratoga – Put History On Your Side

You can wager with the best Belmont Stakes betting sites with some of the key past race trends on your side. These stats will allow you to put history on your side ahead of another edition of the third Triple Crown race.

Before we get going, it’s worth noting the 2024 Belmont Stakes will be staged at Saratoga race course with the continued construction work at Belmont Park. This also means the race will be run over 10 furlongs (2,000m) and NOT the normal mile-and-a-half trip (2,400m), which will suit some Belmont Stakes horses over others.

Belmont Horse Stats and Trends Analyzed

We take a deeper look at some of the main trends and Belmont horse stats – including the best Belmont Stakes post positions from the last eleven renewals.

Plus, which trainers and jockeys have best record in the final Triple Crown race and how the Belmont Stakes favorites have fared since 2013.

Belmont Stakes Post Positions Suggest Gates 8 Or Lower Should Be Respected

The first thing to note on the Belmont Stakes post positions is that let’s not forget this year’s race will be run at Saratoga and also over a two- furlong shorter trip. Meaning we might have to tread carefully with a section of the key trends.

However, we still feel it’s worth showcasing the winning post positions of the recent runnings and these tell us horses from gates 8 or lower have won 8 of the last 11 renewals. This works out at a 73% strike-rate, with gate 2 the only berth that’s seen more than one success with Essential Quality (2021) and Tapwrit (2017) obliging. Resilience will come from gate 2 in 2024.

It could also be interesting that the Belmont Stakes horse from gate 1 has only been successful once since 2004 and that was the 2018 Triple Crown hero Justify.

Of the 10 Belmont Stakes runners in 2024, the two drawn high are – Sierra Leone (9) and Mindframe (10).

Which Gate Did The 2023 Belmont Winner Come From?

Last year’s winner Arcangelo started from gate 3 and actually this stall has seen a horse finish in the first three in ALL of the last four runnings. This year’s gate 3 horse is Mystik Dan.

The final note is, unlike the Kentucky Derby that often has 20 runners, the Belmont Stakes will more likely have less runners. This means this filters into the post position stats as we’ve not had a double-figure stall winner of the Belmont since Creator in 2016.

While, since 2000 there’s only been four winners that started in gates 10+ – which equates to a 83% return for the single-figure drawn horses.

How Have The Belmont Stakes Favorites Fared?

Since 2013 we’ve witnessed a good run from the Belmont Stakes favorites – winning six of the last 11.

It’s also been a good race in recent times for the market leaders finishing in the first three places – 10 of the last 11.

This year’s favorite is likely to be the Kentucky Derby runner-up Sierra Leone, who is heading the Belmont Stakes odds 2024 in the build-up to the race.

Peter Pan Stakes, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Runs Key

Next up is to check the races each Belmont Stakes horse ran in last time, as there is a clear pattern or route that recent winners have taken.

The 2023 Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo was last seen winning the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park a month earlier and this race has been a good guide to the final Triple Crown contest in current times.

Since 2014, we’ve seen three winners of the Belmont also run in the Peter Pan Stakes prior. With Sir Winston (2019) finishing second and both Arcangelo (2023) and Tonalist (2014) winning both races.

Antiquarian Landed The 2024 Peter Pan Stakes

This year’s Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes was staged at Aqueduct racetrack, with the continued redevelopment at Belmont, and won by the Todd Pletcher-trained Antiquarian (watch below).

The other key races to look for ahead of the Belmont are the other two Triple Crown races – no shock here really.

Yes, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes are other obvious races to look back on. As five of the last 11 Belmont winners also ran in that Churchill Downs race and two took in the Preakness.

How Many Belmont Stakes Winners Had Also Won The Kentucky Derby?

We could see this year’s Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan heading to Saratoga, despite his Triple Crown dreams dashed when second to Seize The Grey in the Preakness Stakes.

Over the years there have been 24 horses that have won both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. Made up of 13 Triple Crown winners and 11 horses that have won ONLY the Kentucky and Belmont races.

The first to win both races was the Triple Crown hero Sir Barton in 1919. With the most recent another Triple Crown winner Justify in 2018.

Plus, it’s also worth pointing out that since the turn of the century, there have only been two horses win both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes – American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018). Mystik Dan will be hoping to add his name to that list.

How Many Horses Have Won The Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes?

Now looking at how many horses have won the Preakness and Belmont over the years tells us there have been slightly more – 31 in total.

This is made up of the 13 Triple Crown winners and also 18 other horses that have won just the Preakness and Belmont (see below).

The first horse to win both races was Cloverbrook back in 1877, while the most recent was the Triple Crown hero Justify in 2018.

While since 2000 there have been four horses that have won both the second and third Triple Crown races – Point Given (2001), Afleet Alex (2005), American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018).

Seize The Grey, who won the 2024 Preakness will be looking become the next. However, there is a big stat this D Wayne Lukas runner will need to overcome (see below).

Preakness Stakes Winners That DIDN’T Run In The Kentucky Derby Have A Shocking Record

As we know Seize The Grey won the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 18 and he’s expected to try and also win the Belmont Stakes this season.

However, despite there having been 31 horses to win both of the last two Triple Crown races. There is still a MASSIVE Belmont Stakes stat that Seize The Gray will need to overcome.

The last Preakness/Belmont winner that DIDN’T run in the Kentucky Derby was a horse called Pillory way back in 1922.

Therefore, with Seize The Grey also NOT running at Churchill Downs, he’ll be the latest horse to try and end his 100+ year stat.

Respect Belmont Stakes Horses Wearing Blinders

Another angle on how to bet on the Belmont Stakes is to look for certain headgear the horses are running in.

12 months ago, we saw Arcangelo win the Belmont Stakes wearing blinders and this headear looks worth looking out for again in 2024.

This is backed up with six of the last 11 Belmont winners now sporting blinders. Which works out at a 55% strike-rate.

Look For Horses That Have Already Won Between 1-4 Times

The next Belmont Stakes horse stat to respect is to note horses that have won at least between 1 and 4 times in the past.

This is supported with 8 of the last 11 winners (72%) ticking this trend, while 9 of the last 11 winners had also raced within the last five weeks.

Tapit Is The Belmont Stakes Sire King

What about the best Belmont Stakes breeding?

Well step forward Tapit – the popular gray horse that was trained by Michael Dickinson in the early 2000’s and won the 2004 Wood Memorial Stakes (watch below).

Yes, he actually didn’t win ANY of the Triple Crown races – finishing 9th in the 2004 Kentucky Derby (his only TC race) – but his prodigy has since flourished in the biggest three US flat races.

A massive six of the last 11 Belmont Stakes winners have had some sort of Tapit bloodline in their pedigree. Including last year’s winner Arcangelo, with his Dam’s sire being Tapit.

The other recent Belmont winner with the Tapit genes are – Tonalist (2014), Creator (2016), Tapwrit (2017), Essential Quality (2021) and Tiz The Law (Grand Sire) (2020).

However, Tapit’s pedigree was all about stamina and with the Belmont Stakes normally run over 1 1/2 miles this has been a big reason why he’s sired so many winners. But with the 2024 Belmont Stakes being run over the shorter 1 1/4 mile trip – we’ll have to see if his bloodline is still so dominant.

This year’s Tapit runners are – Mindframe (Grand Sire) and Batten Down (Sire),

Who Are The Best Belmont Stakes Trainers?

See below the winning-most Belmont Stakes trainers in the modern era, with Todd Pletcher and D Wayne Lukas leading the way with four wins each. However, both are still a way off the haul of James G. Rowe Sr, who trained eight Belmont Stakes winners between 1883 and 1913.

Todd Pletcher Belmont Stakes Wins (4)

Trainer Todd Pletcher has saddled four Belmont Stakes winners over the years, with his most recent Mo Donegal in 2022. He’ll be trying to add to that with Fierceness and Antiquarian likely 2024 runners.

  • 2022: Mo Donegal
  • 2017: Tapwrit
  • 2013: Palace Malice
  • 2007: Rags To Riches

D Wayne Lukas Belmont Stakes Wins (4)

Veteran handler D Wayne Lukas has won the Belmont Stakes four times, but the last was in 2000 with Commendable. His main hope will be recent Preakness Stakes hero Seize The Grey.

  • 2000: Commendable
  • 1996: Editor’s Note
  • 1995: Thunder Gulch
  • 1994: Tabasco Cat

Bob Baffert Belmont Stakes Wins (2)

Surprisingly Bob Baffert has only won the Belmont Stakes twice, with his Triple Crown winner American Pharoah the last in 2015. Baffert might have to wait another year too as he might not have any runners in 2024.

  • 2015: American Pharoah
  • 2001: Point Given
