Taken form to a whole new level in recent weeks with Pat Day Mile win at Churchill Downs and Preakness Stakes success latest. Made most of the running at Pimlico on muddy going, so tactically versatile. Barn has won this four times, but not since 2000. Any Triple Crown race winner is one of the horses in the Belmont Stakes 2024 bettors should respect.

2. Resilience

  • Sire: Into Mischief

Twice beaten by Sierra Leone in the Risen Star (fourth) and the Kentucky Derby latest when finishing sixth. In-between those efforts, however, landed a Grade II Triple Crown trial at Aqueduct. Something to find with the leading Belmont Stakes horses on past performances. Barn won this in 2010 with Drosselmeyer.

3. Mystik Dan

  • Sire: Goldencents

Had his head down on the wire at Churchill Downs when landing the Kentucky Derby by a nose from Sierra Leone. Triple Crown bid foiled on the second leg when chasing home Seize The Grey in muddy conditions in Baltimore latest. One of the horses running in the Belmont Stakes with a big chance this year.

4. The Wine Steward

Paradise Farms Corp silks

  • Sire: Vino Rosso
  • Dam: Call To Service
  • Damsire: To Honor And Serve
  • Jockey: Manny Franco
  • Trainer: Michael J Maker
  • Breeder(s): Sequel Thoroughbreds LLC, Lakland Farm & Mark Toothaker
  • Owner(s): Paradise Farms Corp & David Staudacher

  • Form Figures: 1112-22
  • Notable Wins: None
  • Morning Line Odds: 15-1

Won first three starts as a juvenile and three subsequent seconds in graded races. Hard to assess form of Lexington Stakes second on return to action, but better off at the weights with Antiquarian when filling same spot in Peter Pan latest. Barn yet to win a Triple Crown race. Other Belmont Stakes horses and odds appeal more.

5. Antiquarian

Centennial Farms silks

  • Sire: Preservationist
  • Dam: Lifetime Memory
  • Damsire: Istan
  • Jockey: John Velazquez
  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Breeder(s): Brereton C Jones

  • Foaled: May 11, 2021
  • Form Figures: 2161
  • Notable Wins: Peter Pan Stakes
  • Morning Line Odds: 12-1

Behind Honor Marie when sixth in the Louisiana Derby, but has won Grade III trial for this since. Beat Lexington Stakes second and Wood Memorial third at Aqueduct latest. Now heads upstate and among the Belmont Stakes contenders believing there’s more to come. Barn has won this three times since 2013 and four times overall. Can’t be entirely ruled out.

6. Dornoch

Dornoch silks

  • Sire: Good Magic
  • Dam: Puca
  • Damsire: Big Brown
  • Jockey: Luis Saez
  • Trainer: Danny Gargan
  • Breeder(s): Grandview Equine

  • Foaled: April 22, 2021
  • Form Figures: 2211-140
  • Notable Wins: Fountain Of Youth Stakes
  • Morning Line Odds: 15-1

Sierra Leone appears to have the beating of him this year. Stayed nine furlongs at end of juvenile campaign, so may want even further than Triple Crown events at current distances. Only 10th in the Kentucky Derby latest. There are other more likely Belmont contenders 2024 in the line-up.

7. Protective

Repole Stable silks

  • Sire: Medaglia D’Oro
  • Dam: Grace Hall
  • Damsire: Empire Maker
  • Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione
  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Breeder(s): Alpha Delta Stables LLC
  • Owner(s): Repole Stable
  • Foaled: March 1, 2021
  • Form Figures: 2-433
  • Notable Wins: None
  • Morning Line Odds: 20-1

Maiden after four career starts. Solid thirds in Wood Memorial behind Resilience and in Peter Pan latest when closer to Antiquarian and The Wine Steward. A Triple Crown race demands a career best from any runner, but especially him. Perhaps the only one of the Belmont Stakes horses 2024 without any real case. The longshot for four-time race winning barn.

8. Honor Marie

Honor Marie silks

  • Sire: Honor Code
  • Dam: Dame Marie
  • Damsire: Smart Strike
  • Jockey: Florent Geroux
  • Trainer: D Whitworth Beckman
  • Breeder(s): Royce Pulliam
  • Owner(s): Ribble Farms LLC, Michael H Eiserman Et Al
  • Foaled: May 4, 2021
  • Form Figures: 121-528
  • Notable Wins: None
  • Morning Line Odds: 12-1

Had no luck in-running when eighth in the Kentucky Derby latest. Squeezed out early on and forced into racing wide around Churchill Downs. Never in contention, but stayed on through beaten runners. Capable of better on juvenile Grade II win and Louisiana Derby second. One of the horses in Belmont Stakes betting markets to note with Florent Geroux now aboard.

9. Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone silks

  • Sire: Gun Runner
  • Dam: Heavenly Love
  • Damsire: Malibu Moon
  • Jockey: Flavien Prat
  • Trainer: Chad Brown
  • Breeder(s): Debby Oxley
  • Owner(s): Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor Et Al
  • Foaled: March 31, 2021
  • Form Figures: 12-112
  • Notable Wins: Blue Grass Stakes
  • Morning Line Odds: 9-5

Never out the first two in five career starts. Just failed in a three-way photo to land the Kentucky Derby latest and kept for this since. Already a Grade I winner from Keeneland before nose defeat at Churchill Downs. Obviously one of the leading 2024 Belmont Stakes horses on that evidence. Barn seeking first-ever win in this race with Flavien Prat now taking the ride.

10. Mindframe

Mindframe silks

  • Sire: Constitution
  • Dam: Walk Of Stars
  • Damsire: Street Sense
  • Jockey: Irad Ortiz
  • Trainer: Todd Pletcher
  • Breeder(s): R Larry Johnson
  • Owner(s): Repole Stable & St Elias Stable
  • Foaled: May 13, 2021
  • Form Figures: 11
  • Notable Wins: None
  • Morning Line Odds: 7-2

Won both career starts in minor events. Was working with Fierceness before that one ruled out of Belmont Stakes 2024 field in favor of waiting for the Haskell. Now thrown in at the deep end as a super sub. Must step up on ordinary maiden and claimer wins, but in the right hands. Any Belmont runners hailing from this barn worth a closer look. A dark horse for sure.

Belmont Stakes 2024 Horses & Jockeys to Follow

The old saying goes that good horses make good jockeys, but pilots can also give their mounts fine rides. Those on board Belmont Stakes 2024 contenders must be at the top of their game to win it. One the draw is made, it’s up to the jockey to have a plan in the saddle.

Sometimes, Belmont Stakes horses post positions aren’t ideal. There’s a danger they may get squeezed out along the fence from a low draw or forced wide around the turns from a high gate. There are a couple of active riders with two previous wins in the Belmont field trying to add a third victory.

Irad Ortiz Jr. triumphed in 2016 aboard Creator and again in 2022 when riding Mo Donegal. John Velazquez, meanwhile, last enjoyed success in the Belmont in 2012, but had also won it before in 2007.

Joel Rosario doesn’t have a ride in the Belmont Stakes field 2024, but previously partnered successful horses in 2014 and 2019. Other active jockeys to have won the race before but only once include Kent Desormeaux, Jose Ortiz, Manny Franco, Luis Saez and Javier Castellano.

It’s not just jockeys that are Belmont Stakes winners of course, but the trainers and other staff in the barn who help prep them for the big day. Both D. Wayne Lukas and Todd Pletcher, who have runners this year, have four previous victories in the Belmont.
